The Visalia Oaks began play in the California League in 1977, replacing the San Jose Bees. They have played the circuit ever since, aside from the 1993 and 1994 seasons, when the club was known as the Central Valley Rockies.

In the Oaks' second season, they captured a league championship, while seven members of their starting lineup scored over 100 runs.

The 1995 club received players from 9 different organizations, notably the Detroit Tigers (5 hitters), St. Louis Cardinals (4 pitchers), and California Angels (4 players). Bobby Bonds Jr. played 109 games, leading the team with 26 SB.

The 1996 club received a major portion of their players (24) from the Detroit Tigers, with help from the Arizona Diamondbacks (10 players). The club received two players from the Minnesota Twins and one from the Baltimore Orioles. Rod Barajas played 27 games and Dave Roberts played 126 leading the team with 131 H, 112 R, 98 BB, and 65 SB. Justin Thompson started one game while Jeremy Hernandez was 2-9, 5.96 ERA.

From 1997 to 2002 the Oakland A's operated 2 Cal League teams, including Visalia. In 2000 Visalia beat the Modesto A's in the playoffs. In 2002 Modesto beat Visalia.

After the 2008 season the Oaks changed their name to the Visalia Rawhide.
