The religious sect Israelite House of David is best remembered in sports circles for their proficient barnstorming baseball teams, whose players wore their hair and beards long. In the winter, though, the House of David turned to basketball.The House of David was a religious commune headquartered in Benton Harbor, Michigan. The commune required its members to refrain from sex, haircuts, shaving, and the eating of meat.

The House of David fielded some pretty fair barnstorming basketball teams in the first half of the 20th Century. As a homeless young man the photographer and cinematographer Gordon Parks played for the House of David late 1920s. The House of David was invited to participate in the prestigious World Professional Basketball Tournament in 1939 and 1940. They served as the opponent for the Harlem Globetrotters during their 1954 tour of Europe. The House of David ceased to field a team after that tour. the new one starup in 1964 and play midwestern and eastern teams
